The Health & Lives of America’s Moms At Stake As SCOTUS Considers Access To Mifepristone. MomsRising Leader to Speak at SCOTUS Rally Tuesday Morning.
Lisa Lederer, 202/371-1996
“America’s moms are outraged and terrified that the same U.S. Supreme Court that unleashed stunning levels of hardship and chaos on our nation by overturning Roe v. Wade now threatens to take away our access to medication abortion. Continued access to mifepristone, which has been used safely and effectively in the United States for more than two decades and is the only option many of us have left for abortion, is essential to the health and wellbeing of moms, pregnant people, and their families. America’s moms are counting on the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse the appalling lower court ruling and secure our access to this safe, effective medication.
“No court should ever have restricted access to this FDA-approved medication, which has been proven safer than penicillin, Tylenol, and Viagra. The stakes in this case are enormous. Any change to the way mifepristone is prescribed or distributed could in some way harm more than 64.5 million women of reproductive age nationwide – and like abortion restrictions and bans, it would harm moms, women of color, low-income women, young, rural and immigrant women, people with disabilities and those who are LGBTQIA+ the most. Even people living in states that protect abortion rights could have their ability to access mifepristone restricted if SCOTUS rules against the FDA. And an adverse ruling here could put access to many other FDA-approved medications in peril.
“Moms don’t want our children to have fewer freedoms than we’ve had.
“Most people who have abortions are moms, and moms want all safe methods of abortion care to be accessible to all who need it, regardless of where they live, their financial status, or the source of their health coverage. Being able to choose if we have children and, if so, when and how many children to have includes access to abortion care and it is a fundamental right.
“Moms, the medical community, and our country have soundly rejected the dystopian world that SCOTUS and anti-abortion extremists forced on us. An adverse ruling here would intensify the crisis. That must not happen, so we will join our reproductive justice partners to rally, side by side, at the U.S. Supreme Court steps tomorrow morning. Moms know that abortion is basic health care and we will remain in this fight for as long as our access to reproductive health care is threatened or denied. Reproductive rights are human rights. Denying access to safe medications is not okay. Reproductive justice cannot wait.”
